Woe to every slanderer and backbiter. (1)
Who has gathered wealth and counted it, (2)
He thinks that his wealth will make him last forever! (3)
Nay! Verily, he will be thrown into the crushing Fire (4)
And what will make you know what the crushing Fire is? (5)
The fire of Allâh, kindled, (6)
Which leaps up over the hearts, (7)
Verily, it shall be closed upon them, (8)
In pillars stretched forth (i.e. they will be punished in the Fire with pillars). (9)

Allah begins the verse with this kalimah with WAYL. Which linguistically means a curse. Ibn Abbaas (radiallahu ‘anhu) says, wayl is a valley in Hellfire; in this sense, it’s almost as if the person is saying, for what I did, this is what I deserve–come to me, o wayl. Allah knows best.
For us we must be very afraid when we see a verse with WAYL in itfor whatever followed the word, is something Allah does not like us to follow and something we must avoid!

We have came across the word WAYL in our studies which is suratul Maun? Can you remember what are the descriptions of people that Allah despise in that particular surah?

Humazah Lumazah
According to tafsir Ibn Kathir Al Hammaz refers to slander by speech
Al Lammaz – slander by action.
This means that a person finds fault with others and belittles them.
Ibn Abbas said Humazah Lumazah means one who reviles and disgraces others.
Mujahid says Al Humazah is with the hand and the eye and Al Lumazah is with the tongue.
This also translates to backbiting and slander. In general backbiting means talking about someone which he wouldn’t like hearing. It may be true.
If it is not true it is called slander.
Regardless true or otherwise Allah has warned these behaviour with WAYL!
Backbiting and slander also includes mocking a person. Talking condescendingly with eyes and face mimics.
So if we have been doing it thinking it is fun to be among friends mocking other people being the joker and becoming the centre of attention, we must repent and stop the behaviour.

Who has gathered wealth and counted it, (2)
He thinks that his wealth will make him last forever! (3)
In Juzz Amma there will be a lot of verses stressing on how people who are busy gathering wealth. They will pile it up and count then but will not take it out in Allah’s way. This kind of behaviour of gathering wealth is as if they will live forever and the wealth will be theirs to keep for eternity.
Remember in Suratul Masad where the Quran refers to Abu Lahab. Allah mentions none of his wealth will avail him.
According to Muhammad bin Kaab concerning this matter, “His wealth occupies his time in the day, concerning this and that. That when he sleeps at night he sleeps like a rotten corpse.
This kind of people also falls under those that Allah warns His WAYL upon.
Let us look at the examples of the sahabah who were wealthy. How do they spend their wealth
Allah’s most beloved Messenger, Prophet Muhammad (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam), told us: “The best of my followers are those living in my century (generation), then those coming after them and then those coming after the latter.” [Bukhari] Therefore, the people to love the most and look up to, after Prophet Muhammad (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam), are his Sahabah (radi Allahu anhum).
Among the sahabah there are the rich ones namely Abdur Rahman bin Awf, Uthman bin Affan, Abu Bakr As Siddiq

Will they really live forever with their wealth?
One of the fitna that comes with wealth is thinking we can have everything. Thinking that we can purchase good food that can make us live longer. Affording the best medical facilities. Sure we can do all that only with the will of Allah.
But death is true and is always near. And no amount of wealth can hinder this.
Essentially, not that they do not believe that death will come but they put that at the very end of their mine. And continued to collect wealth, busying themselves day and night making business, keeping connections, meetings and so forth. Making sure they will have enough well for themselves and their children.
Remembering Allah if and when they do remember is superficial limiting to days like eid and someone else’s death.
Again there is nothing wrong with being wealthy but wealthy in iman promises you even more on a much longer term. Put Allah as number one priority and investing in the hereafter as number one stock exchange activities.
May Allah guide us and keep our heart firm. May Allah not present wealth as a fitna for us rather as a reward for us in the hereafter.

Allah responds with a KALLA.
When Kalla is used it indicates strong negation. Thus meaning the matter is not as he claims. But instead Allah says
THEY WILL BE THROWN INTO HUTAMAH.
Al HUTAMAH is one of the description of Hellfire. AL Hutamah is the CRUSHER. It is said that it will crush whoever is in it. these people will not only be thrown in but will be flunked into! It shows the humiliation and degradation of the person.
Allah describes Al Hutamah by first of all by describing the fire as the FIRE of ALLAH (Narullah). When Allah associates anything to himself, shows the great nobility and status and grandeur and majesticness of that thing. It’s not just any fire; it’s the fire of Allah!
Allah continues to explain that the fire will leap over the hearts.
Thabit al Bunani said : It will burn them all the way to the hearts while they are still alive.
Muhammad bin Kaab said : The fire will devour every part of the body until it reaches the heart and comes to the level of his throat, then it will return to his body.
This is not just passive fire. If you read up about Hellfire, it’s almost like a beast; it roars. It speaks. It ambushes. And here, we see that it attacks–it leaps upon the hearts. It attacks.

Further description of the FIRE
Mu’sadah.
The fire shall be Mu’sadah meaning covering. instead of an open fire like depicted in the movies, it is a closed down fire and there is nowhere to run.
In Pillars strentched forth
Ibn Abbas said, Allah will make them enter pillars stretched forth where they will be columns above them and they will have chains on their necks and the gates of Hell will be shut upon them.
