Lessons from learning the stories of Shaytan’s Mission

We discussed this and we relate this to our daily lives. Gave examples and so on. Among the examples that can be related to them are thinking that a person is lesser in academic status, arrogant of our talents, looking down on unfortunate children, pride of one’s beauty. Would you like to add your examples?

  1. Being arrogant
  2. pride
  3. Think highly of oneself
  4. Think others are less of status by their look or appearance

These are among Shaytan’s personality that we highlighted. It can be easily related to all of us for as humans we sometimes do think we are better than other people. Sometimes out of confidence. And that is what I wanted to tell them. Have confidence not arrogance.  You can know you are good, but not think lesser of other people.

I fear that I can become among these group. I am constantly reminding myself, that by reading more and learning more does not necessarily make me better than many people. For my knowledge is so micro that it requires more than a million time magnification under the microscope. While other people have more. And combined all that, the knowledge of this world is only a speck of water in the ocean compared to Allah’s knowledge.

Another lesson we can learn about arrogance is not asking Allah for forgiveness. Sometimes we in our heart feel ashamed to ask Allah for forgiveness. Sometimes we take for granted that Allah is All Forgiving and we felt that He would surely forgive without even bothering to ask. And sometimes we delay to ask for repentance because we want to enjoy our time and we think we can repent when we are old.

Do not be like the Shaytan. Seek forgiveness from Allah. ALWAYS!

More lessons are that Shaytan is sending out an army to make sure we all stray. Disturbing us come in many forms. Among them are

  • Encouraging us downright to do bad things.
  • While this can be harder to some people because we have fear in Allah, Shaytan will whisper to us to slow down on good things. And that explain laziness in performing prayers, reading the Quran, memorising, doing homework, listening to parents.
  • Even when good deeds and obligatory actions are performed shaytan will not stop disturbing us and will whisper us things to not allow you to concentrate when performing. that explains why our mind roam when we pray, we yawn when we pray, we cannot concentrate on reading.
  • or we felt that we want to show off when we do good deeds.
  • he encourages us to spent on things we do not need.
  • He blows seeds of hatred and anger.
  • He whispers syak wasangka and doubts about our friends.
  • The ultimate shaytan’s mission is for us not to worship Allah anymore. BEWARE!

And many more

We must prepare ourselves with ammunition against the Shaytan. These are described in previous entry.

If they are too arrogant to honour our father Adam. a.s., do the same, fight shaytan.

It wouldn’t be an easy task. It will be continuous battle. But for those who are steadfast, the greatest reward will await. May we all be among those who receive the reward. Insya Allah.

Ammo Against the Shaytan.

Listen to Surah Al Kahf 18:50

And (remember) when We said unto the angels: Fall prostrate before Adam, and they fell prostrate, all save Iblis. He was of the jinn, so he rebelled against his Lord’s command. Will ye choose him and his seed for your protecting friends instead of Me, when they are an enemy unto you? Calamitous is the exchange for evil-doers. (50)

Allah warns us not to make Shaytan our friend!

Now that we know who our biggest enemy is, and we know what their missions are, we know we must fight them. Our soldiers against Shaytan

1. Strong Iman.

This should be continuous. We must constantly fight to improve our iman by gaining knowledge and doing activities that bring us closer to Allah.

2. Seeking refuge. refer to Al Aaraf 7:200

And if a slander from the devil wound thee, then seek refuge in Allah. Lo! He is Hearer, Knower. (200)

Shaytan has no power over you if you believe in Him. he is a whisperer who withdraws. Only seek refuge in Allah. You can do the

  • AlIsti3adhah – I seek refuge with Allah from Shaytan the cursed one
  • Recite Surah Al Falaq
  • Recite Surah Annas
  • Recite Ayat Kursi

In hadeeth, which I read to them

Narrated by Abu Huraira:

Allah’s Apostle deputed me to keep Sadaqat (al-Fitr) of Ramadan. A comer came and started taking handfuls of the foodstuff (of the Sadaqa) (stealthily). I took hold of him and said, “By Allah, I will take you to Allah’s Apostle .” He said, “I am needy and have many dependents, and I am in great need.” I released him, and in the morning Allah’s Apostle asked me, “What did your prisoner do yesterday?” I said, “O Allah’s Apostle! The person complained of being needy and of having many dependents, so, I pitied him and let him go.” Allah’s Apostle said, “Indeed, he told you a lie and he will be coming again.” I believed that he would show up again as Allah’s Apostle had told me that he would return. So, I waited for him watchfully. When he (showed up and) started stealing handfuls of foodstuff, I caught hold of him again and said, “I will definitely take you to Allah’s Apostle. He said, “Leave me, for I am very needy and have many dependents. I promise I will not come back again.” I pitied him and let him go.

In the morning Allah’s Apostle asked me, “What did your prisoner do.” I replied, “O Allah’s Apostle! He complained of his great need and of too many dependents, so I took pity on him and set him free.” Allah’s Apostle said, “Verily, he told you a lie and he will return.” I waited for him attentively for the third time, and when he (came and) started stealing handfuls of the foodstuff, I caught hold of him and said, “I will surely take you to Allah’s Apostle as it is the third time you promise not to return, yet you break your promise and come.” He said, “(Forgive me and) I will teach you some words with which Allah will benefit you.” I asked, “What are they?” He replied, “Whenever you go to bed, recite “Ayat-al-Kursi”– ‘Allahu la ilaha illa huwa-l-Haiy-ul Qaiyum’ till you finish the whole verse. (If you do so), Allah will appoint a guard for you who will stay with you and no satan will come near you till morning. ” So, I released him. In the morning, Allah’s Apostle asked, “What did your prisoner do yesterday?” I replied, “He claimed that he would teach me some words by which Allah will benefit me, so I let him go.” Allah’s Apostle asked, “What are they?” I replied, “He said to me, ‘Whenever you go to bed, recite Ayat-al-Kursi from the beginning to the end —- Allahu la ilaha illa huwa-lHaiy-ul-Qaiyum—-.’ He further said to me, ‘(If you do so), Allah will appoint a guard for you who will stay with you, and no satan will come near you till morning.’ (Abu Huraira or another sub-narrator) added that they (the companions) were very keen to do good deeds. The Prophet said, “He really spoke the truth, although he is an absolute liar. Do you know whom you were talking to, these three nights, O Abu Huraira?” Abu Huraira said, “No.” He said, “It was Satan.”

Sahih Al Bukhari : Volume 3 : Book 38 : Hadith 505

3.Doing dzikir. (remembrance of Allah). I am trying to encourage my chidren to recite dzkir as much as they can.

4. Read Surah Al Baqarah  (I cannot find the hadith. Please help me)

5. Saying the syahadah. Constantly eminding yurself that there is only one God that is Allah and your messenger is Mohammad s.a.w.

6. Taking wudhu – especially when you feel angry. Being angry makes syaitan happy. Taking effct of taking wudhu will calm you down.

7. Pray

8. Repentance. I mentioned earlier, one of the things that Syaitan did not do was seek repentance when he was kicked out of heaven. His arrogance brought disobedience and made him too proud to seek forgiveness even though he knows that Allah was his creator. Moreover Allah is All Forgivong.

Let us not be like Syaitan he is too proud to seek forgiveness. And because he thinks highly of himself, he even promised Allah that he will stray human. a creature that Allah has honoured, so that human will forget Allah and be just like him. Naudzubillah.

Shaytan’s Mission

I told both Haziq and Sya the story casually. Injecting the Quran verse here and there. Later with Haziq I asked him to concentrate on all the verses mentioned. These notes are merely for guide and quotation of the Quran and Hadeeth.

In between the story, we had discussion and they were asked to write down salient points of the discussion.

  • Who is the first man in this world?
  • What is human made off?
  • What is angel made off?
  • What is jinn made off?

Allah says this in the Quran in Surah AlHijr 15:28

Verily We created man of potter’s clay of black mud altered, (26) And the jinn did We create aforetime of essential fire. (27) And (remember) when thy Lord said unto the angels: Lo! I am creating a mortal out of potter’s clay of black mud altered, (28)

Iblees is also a family of jinn. they are created from fire.  Iblees was the most righteous among the jinns that long time ago they were raised to stay in the heavens along with angels.

When Allah finally blew life into Adam, He asked the angels and Iblees to prostrate to Adam. To honour man. Man will be honoured  to be the khalifah on earth. The angles immediately prostrate but Iblees refused. The stories are repeated many times in different surahs in the Quran.

So Allah asked him why is he not prostrating? You can find the answers in a few verses

Surah Al Hijr 15: 29-33

So, when I have made him and have breathed into him of My Spirit, do ye fall down, prostrating yourselves unto him. (29) So the angels fell prostrate, all of them together (30) Save Iblis. He refused to be among the prostrate. (31) He said: O Iblis! What aileth thee that thou art not among the prostrate? (32) He said: I am not going to prostrate myself unto a mortal whom Thou hast created out of potter’s clay of black mud altered! (33)

Iblees said I am not going to prostrate to a creation that is made of black mud! That was what he said. Remember that all the while Iblees has been very righteous but when it comes to prostrating he refused, because humans are made of mud.

In another verse. Al Sad 38: 71-76

When thy Lord said unto the angels: Lo! I am about to create a mortal out of mire, (71) And when I have fashioned him and breathed into him of My Spirit, then fall down before him prostrate, (72) The angels fell down prostrate, every one, (73) Saving Iblis; he was scornful and became one of the disbelievers. (74) He said: O Iblis! What hindereth thee from falling prostrate before that which I have created with both My hands? Art thou too proud or art thou of the high exalted? (75) He said: I am better than him. Thou createdst me of fire, whilst him Thou didst create of clay. (76)

So Iblees did not prostrate. The Quran said Iblees was scornful. He was angry. he was full of pride. And when Allah asked him are you too proud? Iblees said that he is created of fire while human is created by clay.

In another verse Al Aaraf 7:11-19

And surely, We created you (your father Adam) and then gave you shape (the noble shape of a human being); then We told the angels, “Prostrate yourselves to Adam”, and they prostrated themselves, except Iblîs (Satan), he refused to be of those who prostrated themselves. (11) (Allâh) said: “What prevented you (O Iblîs) that you did not prostrate yourself, when I commanded you?” Iblîs said: “I am better than him (Adam), You created me from fire, and him You created from clay.” (12)

Iblees think that he is made of a better and stronger material than just clay. And this arrogance made him refuse to prostrate to what he thinks is a lesser being.

What does that tell you about Iblees?

After Iblees arrogantly refused to prostrate to Adam, Allah told him that will be thrown away from heaven.

Surah Al Sad 38 : 77-78

(Allâh) said: “Then get out from here, for verily, you are outcast. (77) “And verily!, My Curse is on you till the Day of Recompense.” (78)

Allah told Iblees that they are outcast. Kick out from heaven! And Allah said Iblees is cursed until the the end of the world. Forever!

Do you think Iblees is happy being kicked out from heaven? He is not! And this is what he said to Allah. Surah Al Sad 38 : 79-81

[Iblîs (Satan)] said: “My Lord! Give me then respite till the Day the (dead) are resurrected.” (79) (Allâh) said: “Verily! You are of those allowed respite (80) “Till the Day of the time appointed.” (81)

Iblees ask Allah to give him time until the day we are all raised. Meaning Iblees asked to have a long life. And Allah granted their wishes.

In another verse Al Aaraf 7: 13-15

(Allâh) said: “(O Iblîs) get down from this (Paradise), it is not for you to be arrogant here. Get out, for you are of those humiliated and disgraced.” (13) (Iblîs) said: “Allow me respite till the Day they are raised up (i.e. the Day of Resurrection).” (14) (Allâh) said: “You are of those respited.” (15)

Thus from the stories we found in the Quran, before he went out of heaven he asked for a wish that is to live long. And the reason he asked for the wish which Allah granted was told in this verse

Surah Al israa 17:61-62

And (remember) when We said to the angels: “Prostrate yourselves unto Adam.” They prostrated except Iblîs (Satan). He said: “Shall I prostrate to one whom You created from clay?” (61) [Iblîs (Satan)] said: “See this one whom You have honoured above me, if You give me respite (keep me alive) to the Day of Resurrection, I will surely seize and mislead his offspring (by sending them astray) all but a few!” (62)

Then in another verse

Surah Al Sad 38:82

[Iblîs (Satan)] said: “By Your Might, then I will surely mislead them all, (82)

In another verse Al Aaraf 7:16-18

(Iblîs) said: “Because You have sent me astray, surely I will sit in wait against them (human beings) on Your Straight Path (16) Then I will come to them from before them and behind them, from their right and from their left, and You will not find most of them as thankful ones (i.e. they will not be dutiful to You).” (17) (Allâh) said (to Iblîs) “Get out from this (Paradise) disgraced and expelled. Whoever of them (mankind) will follow you, then surely I will fill Hell with you all.” (18)

Iblees promised that with the long life, he will mislead all the human against the truth! Iblees made this promise in front of Allah that his mission is to misguide all of us. He promise that he will make the human do bad things and make sure that they will disturb all of us and make sure we stay away from Allah’s way. Iblees wants the human to worship him instead of Allah.

More verse on Shaytan’s promise to stray us An Nisa 4:118-121

Allâh cursed him. And he [Shaitân (Satan)] said: “I will take an appointed portion of your slaves; (118) Verily, I will mislead them, and surely, I will arouse in them false desires; and certainly, I will order them to slit the ears of cattle, and indeed I will order them to change the nature created by Allâh.” And whoever takes Shaitân (Satan) as a Walî (protector or helper) instead of Allâh, has surely suffered a manifest loss.[] (119) He [Shaitan (Satan)] makes promises to them, and arouses in them false desires; and Shaitan’s (Satan) promises are nothing but deceptions. (120) The dwelling of such (people) is Hell, and they will find no way of escape from it. (121)

Discuss with them about Shaytan’s mission. How do you think Shaytan will stray you?

Take note, when Syaitan was kicked out of heaven, he asked for a wish to be granted. Instead of asking for forgiveness to Allah who is All Forgiving, he asked for a respite because he has a mission of straying all of us human. He has no remorse of what he had done, in fact he wanted to add further to his disobedient act to Allah.

Allah said to Iblees in Surah Al Israa 17:63-64

Allah said: “Go thy way; if any of them follow thee, verily Hell will be the recompense of you (all)― an ample recompense. (63) “Lead to destruction those whom thou canst among them, with thy (seductive) voice; make assaults on them with thy cavalry and thy infantry; mutually share with them wealth and children; and make promises to them. But Satan promises them nothing but deceit. (64)

Allah allowed Syaitan to try and stray the human for this will be sent as a test for us living on earth.

And then you know what will happen in the hereafter?

Read it in Surah Ibrahim 14:22-23

And Satan saith, when the matter hath been decided: Lo! Allah promised you a promise of truth; and I promised you, then failed you. And I had no power over you save that I called unto you and ye obeyed me. So blame not, but blame me yourselves. I cannot help you, nor can ye help me, Lo! I disbelieved in that which ye before ascribed to me. Lo! for wrong-doers is a painful doom. (22) And those who believed and did good works are made to enter Gardens underneath which rivers flow, therein abiding by permission of their Lord, their greeting therein: Peace! (23)

Syaitan said that he cannot even help those who have done wrong. Those who were bad and those who followed him. He said now you have to be responsible for what you do. And all will be punished like he will be too! And at that time, those who followed Syaitan will regret at the actions they did when they lived on earth. But it will be too late. And together they will join Syaitan laknatullah in the buring hell tortured forever.

And Allah said those who believe and not follow Shaytan will reside in heaven. May you all my children be in Jannah too. Ameen.

But who will not be fooled by Shaytan?

Surah Al Sad 38:81-85

(Allâh) said: “Verily! You are of those allowed respite (80) “Till the Day of the time appointed.” (81) [Iblîs (Satan)] said: “By Your Might, then I will surely mislead them all, (82) “Except Your chosen slaves amongst them (faithful, obedient, true believers of Islâmic Monotheism).” (83) (Allâh) said: “The Truth is,— and the Truth I say, — (84)

.Shaytan said, only those who TRULY believe will not be strayed. May we all be in this group. Ameen

Awrah in Solah

This is mainly for Haziq.

During prayers we must cover our awrah

Al Aaraf 7:31
O Children of Adam! Take your adornment (by wearing your clean clothes) while praying.

The awrah for woman

I was flipping through the buku sekolah agama selangor Malaysia on this topic but I became unsure of the contents concerning the arwah for woman as depicted in their photos.

I am not sure about the gloves the girls are wearing. I also am not sure about the last bottom right picture where her hijab is not covering her chest.

Can you comment about this?

I didn’t use this photo for the study though.

  • Anyway the awrah for woman is all except for face and hand
  • She should cover the top feet too.

Prophet s.a.w said, “The prayer of an adult woman is not accepted unless she is wearing headcovering.” recorded by Abu Dawood, Tirmidhi and Ibn Najah.

The awrah for men are

  • between the navel and the knees
  • However must also cover the shoulders

The prophet s.a.w said, “None of you should offer prayer in a single garment that does not cover the shoulders.”

Sahih Al Bukhari Book 8 (reported by Abu huraira R.A.)

  • The praying clothes should not show shape or body contour. This applies for both man and woman
  • They should not be thin and transparent. for both men and women
  • They should be clean
  • We should present ourselves nicely when we want to pray.

e.g. if we are ashame to walk about in particular shirt, we should present ourselves better than that.

  • Rasullullah prefers thick garments without any marking (pictures of animals). Patterns are preferable than pictures. The jamhoor hold the position that it is makrooh.
  • It is permissible tp pray in bare head for man as the head is awrah for woman. however it is recommended (mustahab) that he is completely dressed for praying thus the head is best covered. This is also to differentiate between muslims and non. However during pilgrimage it is law not to cover the head.

Today is practical “test” for both haziq and Sya on their wudhu’. This time I paid more attention to their niyat. I stress that the niyat should be done in their heart.

Then Sya was asked to list down the steps of wudhu’. She did well.

Haziq was asked to list only the wajib ones. He forgot to mention that repeating three times is sunat.

I think this ‘test’ will be done periodically. And each time different point will be stressed just to make sure that it has not become too ritual with lack of understanding..

Allah’s Names : Al Alim (العليم)

For both Haziq and Sya.

I introduced to them the Asmaul Husna. Haziq was already introduced the names of Allah in his weekly fardhu Ain. I wanted to reintroduce in a different fashion.

So instead of introducing Allah’s names in the normal order of Allah, Ar Rahman, ArRahim and so on, I introduced in a collective of names.

the first group is Al Alim, As Samii and Al Basir.

All these names will link eventually to having taqwa to Allah knowing that Allah knows everything! Allah hears everything! Allah can see everything!

Can you suggest other names that can be grouped. For example Arrahman and Arrahim. Ar Razzaq Al Kareem?

I used the talibiddeenjr‘s syllabus for this.

First I highlighted to both of them that Allah has the best of names as in Surah Taha:8
Allah! la Ila Ha Illa huwa (none has the right to be worshipped but He!) To Him belongs the best of names.

We discussed why we need to learn Allah’s names. This is because we need to address Him by his various names to teach us to be humble when we make Dua’. I gave an example, when we are asking Allah to bestow us with Rizq, Call on him ya Razzaq and make our dua’. Allah’s name also describe Allah’s attributes and thus may we learn to know Allah better.

For this week I only introduced that Allah is Al Alim

Al Alim : Allah know everything!

Allah’s name Al ALim appear in the Quran many times. I told the children, when we read the Quran, you can watch out for the word Al Alim. Now that you know the meaning. 😀

Al Baqarah V 115
To Allah belongs the east and the west and whithersoever you turn there is Allah’s countenance for Allah is all embracing, All knowing.

Al Nahl 16:19

And Allah knoweth that which ye keep hidden and that which ye proclaim.

Batrisyia was asked to write the word Al ALim in arabic and write down the meaning as well.

haziq was asked to write down what we discussed. This is what he wrote

He knows everything, not just on the outside, but also what is in your heart. he knows what you did good and bad (NOT SANTA CLAUS). I know I must not show off when I do a good deed. I will also not do any bad deed.

We brainstormed about some things that Allah knows about our personal action that any other people would not know. These are their answers

haziq : Drinking in the toilet during Ramadhan (a cheat answer since I am always giving this example :P)
Sya : hiding chocolates under the bed. Hahaha. An original answer indeed.

When we discuss about Al Alim I stress that Allah knows EVERYTHING we did. This should bring fear in your heart. Fear Allah when you want to do something bad. Fear that you cannot hide anything from him even in the darkest smallest hole possible.

But not only that, I stressed that Allah knows that you have done good. So there is no need to show off. for the only reward you want is from Allah. Allah knows even the littlest good deed that you did. Nothing will go unrecorded. Even picking a nail on the road fearing that it will hurt someone. Knowing that Allah will be please with you is sufficient.

Allah knows when you are sad. when you are in trouble, when you are in need, so pray to Allah and ask from Him for he knows what is best for you.

A possible progress on lapbook

I asked Sya to write Al ALim in arabic, the pronunciation and the meaning in a palm sized paper.
Then I paste this on a black sugar paper.
At the back haziq is to write down a verse where there is Al ALim in it, and also what he understood about Al Alim (as discussed earlier)

Later on the collection of names will be made into a book. A lapbook of Allah’s names. Insya Allah.

Sifat Allah : Wujud, Qidam

Before I proceed on the topic Sifat Allah, I must say that I am using The Malaysian Sekolah agama textbook. In most textbooks they would cover the sifat 20. So I am covering that too. if you have any suggestion on this topic I would certainly appreciate inputs

This syllabus is particularly for Haziq (at the moment)

We covered these two sifats
1. Wujud
We emphasised that Allah exists.

The Nas for this is in Al Ikhlas Verse 1
He is Allah, the only One

Than we discussed on other proves of the existense of Allah. I asked him to reflect on the creation of the things around us. The organisation of night and day, teh sun and the moon, the way the planets circle the sun, the moon rotates the earth, moons on other planets, millions of suns. I ask him to look at ourselves. The organisation of bones. On how the bone structure was mad in such a way that we could walk and pick things up and move the way we do. the heart, the kms of nerves and every little organisme in the world.

That it cannot be made naturally, poof like that. There has to be a Creator! And the creator is Allah. Annd all the things around us are created for us to reflect that Allah exists.

2. Qidam – Allah has no begiing and has no end

The nAs is in Al Hadid, Verse 3

He is the First and the Last

We discusses, in our human mind, its difficult for us to phantom the concept that something which has no beginning. That is because Allah has made things around us to have beginning and to have an end. We cannot compare the created to the Creator!

Understand that Allah has no beginning and has no end.

I have decided to discontinue the study of sifat Allah yang 20. But rather I will only concentrate on Allah’s names and his attributes. May Allah guide me and make me steadfast in teaching my children.
