Invocation Before Sleeping

Besides reading the quran, it was also from the Prophet’s saw guidance that we make supplication at the end of the night. Every Muslim should read them and remember Allah before going to sleep. In a narration by Abu Hurairah

The Book Pertaining to the Remembrance of Allah, Supplication, Repentance and Seeking Forgiveness (Kitab Al-Dhikr)
Muslim :: Book 35 : Hadith 6556

Anas reported Allah’s Messenger (may peace be upon him) as saying: When you go to bed, say:” Praise is due to Allab Who fed us, provided us drink, sufficed us and provided us with shelter, for many a people there is none to suffice and none to provide shelter.”

General Behavior (Kitab Al-Adab)
Dawud :: Book 41 : Hadith 5041

Narrated AbuHurayrah:

The Prophet (peace_be_upon_him) said: If anyone lies on his side where he does not remember Allah, deprivation will descend on him on the Day of Resurrection; and if anyone sits in a place where he does not remember Allah, deprivation will descend on him on the Day of Resurrection.

Contemplation on most of the meanings of the supplication
i. The Prophet saw mentioned tawheed
ii. expressed his poverty before Allah
iii. ask for forgiveness
iv. ask for repentance
v. to protect from the punishment in the Hereafter
vi. refuge from Shaytan
vii. praised and thank Allah for His favours

Among the supplications we can start doing

1. Seeking protection from punishment in the Hereafter

General Behavior (Kitab Al-Adab)
Dawud :: Book 41 : Hadith 5027

Narrated Hafsah, Ummul Mu’minin:

When the Apostle of Allah (peace_be_upon_him) wanted to go to sleep, he put his right hand under his cheek and would then say three times: O Allah, guard me from Thy punishment on the day when Thou raisest up Thy servants.

Al Albanee ruled this hadith as authentic.

2. Tawheed and reliance on Allah

The Book Pertaining to the Remembrance of Allah, Supplication, Repentance and Seeking Forgiveness (Kitab Al-Dhikr)
Muslim :: Book 35 : Hadith 6544

Al-Bara’ b. ‘Azib reported that Allah’s, Messenger (may peace be upon said: When you go to bed, perform ablution as is done for prayer; then lie down on the right side and recite:” O Allah, I submit my soul unto You, and I entrust my affair unto You, and I totally rely on You, in hope and fear on You. Verily there is no refuge nor safe haven from You except with You. I believe in Your book which You have revealed and in Your Prophets whom You have sent’. If you die that night, then you will be upon Al Fitrah. And make them the final words you speak.

3. Remembrance of Allah

Invocations
Bukhari :: Book 8 :: Volume 75 :: Hadith 336

Narrated Hudhaifa:

Whenever the Prophet intended to go to bed, he would recite: “Bismika Allahumma amutu wa ahya (With Your name, O Allah, I die and I live).” And when he woke up from his sleep, he would say: “Al-hamdu lil-lahil-ladhi ahyana ba’da ma amatana; wa ilaihi an-nushur (All the Praises are for Allah Who has made us alive after He made us die (sleep) and unto Him is the Resurrection). “

بِاسْمَكَ اللهمَّ أَمُوتُ وَأَحْيَا

With Your name, O Allah, I die and I live

4. Glorifying Allah, seeking protection, asking forgiveness and good health

The Book Pertaining to the Remembrance of Allah, Supplication, Repentance and Seeking Forgiveness (Kitab Al-Dhikr)
Muslim :: Book 35 : Hadith 6550

Abdullah ibn Umar once ordered a man to say the following words upon going to sleep, “O Allah, verily You have created my soul and You shall take its life and death. If you should keep my soul alive, then protect it, and if you should take its life, then forgive it. O Allah I ask You to grant me good health.” A man asked Abdullah, “Did you hear this from Umar  (Abdullah’s father)?” Abdullah said, “From one who is better than Umar – from the Messenger of Allah saw.”

5. Asking to be free of debt and spare from poverty.

The Book Pertaining to the Remembrance of Allah, Supplication, Repentance and Seeking Forgiveness (Kitab Al-Dhikr)
Muslim :: Book 35 : Hadith 6551

Suhail reported that Abu Salih used to command us (in these words): When any one of you intend to go to sleep, he should lie on the bed on his right side and then say:” O Allah. the Lord of the Heavens and the Lord of the Earth and Lord of the Magnificent Throne, our Lord, and the Lord of everything, the Splitter of the grain of corn and the date stone (or fruit kernal), the Revealer of Torah and Injil (Bible) and Furqan, I seek refuge in You from the evil of every beast you shall sieze by the forelock (Thou hast perfect control over it). O Allah, You are the First, there is nothing before You, and You are the Last and there is nothing after You, and You are Evident and there is nothing above You, and You are Innermost and there is nothing beyond You. Remove the burden of debt from us and spare us from poverty.” Abu Salih used to narrate it from Abu Huraira who narrated it from Allah’s Apostle (may peace be upon him).

6. Declaring tawheed and Seeking refuge in Allah from evil

General Behavior (Kitab Al-Adab)
Dawud :: Book 41 : Hadith 5049

Narrated AbuHurayrah:

AbuBakr as-Siddiq said: Apostle of Allah! command me something to say in the morning and in the evening. He said: Say “O Allah, Creator of the heavens and the earth, Who knowest the unseen and the seen, Lord and Possessor of everything. I testify that there is no god but Thee; I seek refuge in Thee from the evil within myself, from the evil of the devil, and his (incitement to) attributing partners (to Allah).” He said: Say this in the morning.

Al Albanee ruled that this hadith is authentic

7. Thanking Allah

The Book Pertaining to the Remembrance of Allah, Supplication, Repentance and Seeking Forgiveness (Kitab Al-Dhikr)
Muslim :: Book 35 : Hadith 6556

Anas reported Allah’s Messenger (may peace be upon him) as saying: When you go to bed, say:” Praise is due to Allab Who fed us, provided us drink, sufficed us and provided us with shelter, for many a people there is none to suffice and none to provide shelter.”

8. Tasbeeh, Tahmeed and Takbeer

One-fifth of Booty to the Cause of Allah (Khumus)
Bukhari :: Book 4 :: Volume 53 :: Hadith 344
Narrated ‘Ali:

Fatima complained of what she suffered from the hand mill and from grinding, when she got the news that some slave girls of the booty had been brought to Allah’s Apostle. She went to him to ask for a maid-servant, but she could not find him, and told ‘Aisha of her need. When the Prophet came, Aisha informed him of that. The Prophet came to our house when we had gone to our beds. (On seeing the Prophet) we were going to get up, but he said, ‘Keep at your places,’ I felt the coolness of the Prophet’s feet on my chest. Then he said, “Shall I tell you a thing which is better than what you asked me for? When you go to your beds, say: ‘Allahu Akbar (i.e. Allah is Greater)’ for 34 times, and ‘Alhamdu Lillah (i.e. all the praises are for Allah)’ for 33 times, and Subhan Allah (i.e. Glorified be Allah) for 33 times. This is better for you than what you have requested.”

Now this lesson may be a bit overwhelming to start off reading the dua verbatim. However these are small effort to complete our day fulfilling the purpose of worshipping to Allah.

What the children can do is firts memorise the shorter ones in arabic and understand the meaning. Meanwhile to ponder the meaning od the longer supplications and make dua’ in the language they find comfortable. Insya Allah to build up later.

May Allah make it easy for all of us.

What we can do for now
1. Immediately after Isya’ we read Al Mulk. Because if we wait until we got to bed only to read it, we are bound to go to sleep without reading it.

2. Recite ‘Allahu Akbar (i.e. Allah is Greater)’ for 34 times, and ‘Alhamdu Lillah (i.e. all the praises are for Allah)’ for 33 times, and Subhan Allah (i.e. Glorified be Allah) for 33 times. By the way, we are already doing this dzikir after prayers. Thus you can recite it as you were lying down.

3.Recite this dua’ بِاسْمَكَ اللهمَّ أَمُوتُ وَأَحْيَا

With Your name, O Allah, I die and I live

Insya Allah the easiest one first.

4. Can also make general dua’. Rasulullah’s sunnah of dua’ before sleep in general are
Seeking protection from punishment in the Hereafter
Tawheed and reliance on Allah
O Allah, I submit my soul unto You, and I entrust my affair unto You, and I totally rely on You, in hope and fear on You. Verily there is no refuge nor safe haven from You except with You. I believe in Your book which You have revealed and in Your Prophets whom You have sent’.

5. Glorifying Allah, seeking protection, asking forgiveness and good health
O Allah, verily You have created my soul and You shall take its life and death. If you should keep my soul alive, then protect it, and if you should take its life, then forgive it. O Allah I ask You to grant me good health.

6. Asking to be free of debt and spare from poverty.

7. Declaring tawheed and Seeking refuge in Allah from evil

8. Thanking Allah

Masjid Nabawi

Prophet Muhammad s.a.w. stayed in Quba for a few days, and then set off to Madinah.

The tribes and families of Madinah came streaming forth to meet prophet s.a.w..

The Ansar people, who comprised of two tribes, were wholeheartedly eager to receive Prophet Muhammad s.a.w. to their house. They welcomed Muhammad in the best garment and glittering armour and everyone called out to prophet muhammad s.a.w. to stay with them.

Prophet Muhammad sa.w. said kindly, “leave the camel, for it is commanded by Allah.”

Thus the camel moved onward until it reached the site of the Prophet’s Mosque and knelt down. And that was the site where the mosques was built.

Merits of the Helpers in Madinah (Ansaar)
Bukhari :: Book 5 :: Volume 58 :: Hadith 245

Narrated ‘Aisha:

(Part of a long hadith)
Allah’s Apostle prayed in it (Masjid Quba) and then mounted his she-camel and proceeded on, accompanied by the people till his she-camel knelt down at (the place of) the Mosque of Allah’s Apostle at Medina. Some Muslims used to pray there in those days, and that place was a yard for drying dates belonging to Suhail and Sahl, the orphan boys who were under the guardianship of ‘Asad bin Zurara. When his she-camel knelt down, Allah’s Apostle said, “This place, Allah willing, will be our abiding place.” Allah’s Apostle then called the two boys and told them to suggest a price for that yard so that he might take it as a mosque. The two boys said, “No, but we will give it as a gift, O Allah’s Apostle!” Allah’s Apostle then built a mosque there. The Prophet himself started carrying unburnt bricks for its building and while doing so, he was saying “This load is better than the load of Khaibar, for it is more pious in the Sight of Allah and purer and better rewardable.” He was also saying, “O Allah! The actual reward is the reward in the Hereafter, so bestow Your Mercy on the Ansar and the Emigrants.”

During those days the mosque was built by adobe bricks and the roof by date palm branches and its pillars were the trunks of date palm trees.

And now many extensions have been done including renovations and decorations as you see it now.

Prayers (Salat)
Bukhari :: Book 1 :: Volume 8 :: Hadith 437

Narrated ‘Abdullah bin ‘Umar:

In the life-time of Allah’s Apostle the mosque was built of adobes, its roof of the leaves of date-palms and its pillars of the stems of date-palms. Abu Bakr did not alter it. ‘Umar expanded it on the same pattern as it was in the lifetime of Allah’s Apostle by using adobes, leaves of date-palms and changing the pillars into wooden ones. ‘Uthman changed it by expanding it to a great extent and built its walls with engraved stones and lime and made its pillars of engraved stones and its roof of teak wood.

Virtues of The Prophet’s Mosque

The Noble Prophet’s Mosque possess an elevated status and high rank and great virtue.

According to hadith

Prayer at Night (Tahajjud)

Bukhari :: Book 2 :: Volume 21 :: Hadith 282

Narrated Abu Huraira

Allah’s Apostle said, “One prayer in my Mosque is better than one thousand prayers in any other mosque excepting Al-Masjid-AI-Haram.”

//

Lessons

1. Praying in Masid An Nabawi is one thousand prayer better than any other mosque

2. Do you remember how much is it in Masjidil Haram?

Even though, the Prophet’s mosque is way bigger than the original one with a lot of new extensions made, insya Allah the virtue of praying anywhere in the mosque will be rewarded as per tha hadith.

According to  Shaikhul Islam Ibn taimiyah – may Allah have mercy on him – His mosque was smaller than it is today, as was the sacred mosque, but the Rightly-guided caliphs and those who come after them had increased them both, and the ruling of the additions is the same ruling on additions in all matters. (Majmu’ Fatawa Ibn Taymiyah)

Prophet’s Grave

Do you know that during the Prophet’s time, he lives very near to his masjid? There were a few rooms for the Ummul Mu’minoon.

When Prophet Muhammad salallahu alaihi wassalam died, he was in Aisyah radiallahhu anha’s room. When the Prophet salallahu alaihi wassalam, the companions didn’t know where to bury him until Abu Bakr radiallahhu anhu said, that he heard the Prophet salallahu alaihi wassalam said,

A Prophet should not be buried except where he dies.

So they removed his mattress in Aisyah radiallahhu anha’s room and dug the hole under where the matress had lain.

Thus the grave you see today was previously Aisyah radiallahhu anha’s room.

In the room also they buried Abu Bakr radiallahhu anhu And Omar radiallahhu anhu.

Visiting the graves is not an obligation to us. It is not a condition of either umrah or hajj. When you want to go to the masjid, you must have the niyyah to pray in the mosque and not because of the grave.

Some of the wrong hadith that is very weak

Whoever performs the hajj and does not visit me has shunned me.

Whoever visited me after my death, it will be as if he visited me during my life.

Whoever visited me and visited my father, Abraham in the same year, Allah will guarantee huim Paradise.

Whiever visited my grave, must receive my intercession.

(Al haj wal Umrah waz Ziyarah by Shaikh Abdul Aziz bin Abdullah bin baz)

If you do go visit, just stand respectfully next to the grave and say

السلام عليك يا رسول الله ورحمته وبركاته

May peace, Mercy and Blessings of Allah be upon you O Messenger of Allah.

Then you can send salutations of peace upon Abu bakar And Umar radiallahhuma.

When Abdullah bin Umar visited the graves, he would not say much except this

Shortening the Prayer

Malik :: Book 9 : Hadith 9.22.71

Yahya related to me from Malik that Abdullah ibn Dinar said, “I saw Abdullah ibn Umar stop by the grave of the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, and ask for blessings on the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, and on Abu Bakr and Umar.”

السلام عليك يا رسول الله ،السلام عليك ياأبا باكر، السلام عليك يا أباه

Then he would leave.

Do not

1. wipe the grave or the chamber

2. Do not kiss it

3. do not circumbalate it

4. Do not make du’a asking Prophet Muhamamd anything. We only ask from Allah. Remember! Seeking from the dead, even though he was a prophet, is associating partners with Allah. And that is shirk! A sin that is not forgiven by Allah unless you make sincere tawabah when you are alive@

5. Do not stand there for a long time

6. Do not pray towards the grave. SHIRK!

Prophet’s Pulpit

Virtues and Merits of the Prophet (pbuh) and his Companions

Bukhari :: Book 4 :: Volume 56 :: Hadith 784

Narrated Jabir bin ‘Abdullah:

The Prophet used to stand by a tree or a date-palm on Friday. Then an Ansari woman or man said. “O Allah’s Apostle! Shall we make a pulpit for you?” He replied, “If you wish.” So they made a pulpit for him and when it was Friday, he proceeded towards the pulpit (for delivering the sermon). The date-palm cried like a child! The Prophet descended (the pulpit) and embraced it while it continued moaning like a child being quietened. The Prophet said, “It was crying for (missing) what it used to hear of religious knowledge given near to it.”

Subhanallah!

And you certainly can pray at raudah. Raudah is located between Prophet alallahu alaihi wassalam and the pulpit.

Prayer at Night (Tahajjud)

Bukhari :: Book 2 :: Volume 21 :: Hadith 287

Narrated Abu Huraira:

The Prophet said, “Between my house and my pulpit there is a garden of the gardens of Paradise, and my pulpit is on my fountain tank (i.e. Al-Kauthar).”

Remember we talk about the Al Kawthar HERE.? Thus this small area, has a lot of mercy from Allah. Try yor best to make prayers there and make the most dua’ while you are at that.

As you are eager to make dua’, remember everyone else does too. So have patience and do not push around. Follow the guard’s instruction and do not cause havoc. If you are pressured by the crowd, turn your mind to dzikir, Insya Allah.

Taharah (Purification)

Keep yourself clean 😀

Islam really wants us to be clean. Clean can mean

1. Physically clean.

Look at your hands, in between your nails, your mouth, your toes, your shirts, your pants. Are they clean?

2. Spiritually clean

Be patient, don’t be angry, be happy with what you have, don’t be jealous, no hating other people

One way Rasulullah s.a.w. describe to be pure and clean is by the FIVE DAILY PRAYERS

by Abu Hurairah,

“What do you think? If there was a river at the door of one of you in which he bathes five times a day, would there be any filth left on him?” They answered, “There would be no filth left.” The Prophet (s.a.w.) said, “That is like the five Prayers, through them Allâh wipes away sins.” (al-Bukhâri and Muslim)

Muslim :: Book 4 : Hadith 1410

Lessons

1. Rasulullah s.a.w says prayers will clean your sin

2. Sins is liken as filth

3. rasulullah s,a,w stressed on the importance of keeping clean either from filth and from sins.

and also in order to pray we must be in the state of purity by

1. taking wudoo’

2. having the special bath – ghusl – for major impurity like after menses.

The Book of Purification (Kitab Al-Taharah)

Muslim :: Book 2 : Hadith 433

Mus’ab b. Sa’d reported: ‘Abdullah son of Umar came to Ibn’Amir in order to inquire after his health as he was ailing. He said Ibn ‘Umar, why don’t you prayto Allah for me? He said: I heard of Allah’s Messenger (may peace be upon him) say: Neither the prayer is accepted without purification nor is charity accepted out of the ill-gotten (wealth)

A major act of worship to do to perform prayer

1. We must have wudoo

2. To make ghusl.

Rasulullah s.a.w warned those who do not take care of cleaning after they pee

Ablutions (Wudu’)

Bukhari :: Book 1 :: Volume 4 :: Hadith 215

Narrated Ibn ‘Abbas:

Once the Prophet, while passing through one of the grave-yards of Medina or Mecca heard the voices of two persons who were being tortured in their graves. The Prophet said, “These two persons are being tortured not for a major sin (to avoid).” The Prophet then added, “Yes! (they are being tortured for a major sin). Indeed, one of them never saved himself from being soiled with his urine while the other used to go about with calumnies (to make enemy between friends). The Prophet then asked for a green leaf of a date-palm tree, broke it into two pieces and put one on each grave. On being asked why he had done so, he replied, “I hope that their torture might be lessened, till these get dried.”

Lessons

1. do not see cleaning yourself after peeing is not important. It is very important!

2. Rasulullah saw narrated that some are tortured in the grave because they are careless about urinating! So beware!

3. Make sure your clothes are free from your urine too. Wash it if there was an accident (of urine) happen. Remember even if I don’t know, Allah knows!

Islam encourages us to look clean too

Jâbir narrated:
“Once the Messenger of Allâh  came to us and saw a man with shaggy hair. He said, ‘Couldn’t he find something to tidy his hair up?’ Then he saw another man with dirty clothes and said, ‘Couldn’t this man find anything with which to clean his dress?’ ” (Ahmad)

Lessons
1. Rasulullah s.a.w.even want the hair to look tidy and clean
2. And the dress to be free of stain

What we can do
1. Make sure our hair smell good and well combed
2. Hair should look good even before we put on the hijab. Hijab is not commanded to use to not let people see our bad hair.
3. Shampoo it now and then.
4. Make sure our shirt are stain free
5. Wear shirts that are ironed and clean.

Remember the dua’ that we make after wudoo’. We studied it HERE. We ask Allah that we are among those who purify ourselves. And purify here means both physically and spiritually.

And the same goes to your room too!
