We believe in Angels : Mikaa’eel

Mikaa’eel is ordered to ring the rain, plants and food to the creation with the permission of Allah.

Remember we discussed that the Jews hated Jibreel but prefer Mikaeel.  Because jibreel brings in messages from Allah that they do not like while Mikaaeel brings in provision.

We must iterate again that Allah says, we love all angels and if you chose one above another, then you do not believe in all and is Allah’s enemy.

“Whoever is an enemy to Allâh, His Angels, His Messengers, Jibrael (Gabriel) and Mikael (Michael), then verily, Allâh is an enemy to the disbelievers.” (Al Baqarah 2:98)

Then we learned this hadith and discussed the lessons that we can extract from it.

The Book Pertaining to Piety and Softening of Hearts (Kitab Al-Zuhd wa Al-Raqa’iq)

Muslim :: Book 42 : Hadith 7112

Abu Huraira reported: While a person was in the wilderness he heard a voice from the cloud (commanding it thus): Irrigate the garden of so and so. (After that the clouds slinked aside and poured water on a stony ground. It filled a channel amongst the channels of that land and that person followed that water and he found a person standing in the garden busy in changing the course of water with the help of a hatchet. He said to him: Servant of Allah, what is your name? he said: So and so. And it was that very name which he had heard from the clouds. and he said to him: Servant of Allah, why do you ask me my name? He said: I beard a voice from the clouds of which It is the downpour, saying: Water the garden of so and to. like your name. What do you do (for the favour) shown to you by Allah in this matter? He said: Now as you state so. I look what yield I get from it. and I give one-third as charity out of it and I and my children eat one-third of it and one-third I return to it as investment.

Always bear in mind that all the angels over the heaven and on the earth follow the commands of Allah over their appointed responsibilities.

And by those angels who arrange to do the Commands of their Lord. An Naziat 79:5

And those (angels) who distribute (provisions, rain, and other blessings) by (Allâh’s) Command; Ad Dzariat 51:

Ar Rahman Ar Rahim

Both the names Rahman and Raheem comes from the root raheem which means mercy or rahmah.

Linguistically this means compassion, kindness and gentleness.

Thus Ar Rahman and Ar Raheem  : The one who has ALOT of rahmah, the one who shows  shows ALOT of rahmah, expresses ALOT of rahmah.

These two names of Allah emphasises that Allah is MOST merciful and no one else is more merciful that Allah.

Ar Rahman

Indicates the one who has extensive and great mercy

Ar Rahman extends to all of His creation including the disbelievers.

Allah’s mercy in this world is general: given to the believer and the disbeliever. He provides for them and gives them health and what they ask for.

Yusuf 12: 56

We bestow of Our Mercy on whom We will, and We make not to be lost the reward of Al-Muhsinûn

Ar Rahman 55: 1-5

The Most Gracious (Allâh)! (1) He has taught (you mankind) the Qur’ân (by His Mercy). (2) He created man. (3) He taught him eloquent speech. (4) The sun and the moon run on their fixed courses (exactly) calculated with measured out stages for each (for reckoning). (5)

He created mankind. And the mercy is not just for the believers but for everyone.

Ar Rahman appears many times in surah Maryam and Furqan. These surahs are the easrly surahs i.e. makee surahs. They were also the introduction of the deen. One of the first ways of Allah introdducing Himself is by the attribute of Rahmah.

Thus when people learn about Allah, they should not only learn that Allah will put them in Hellfire but more of Allah is ready to accept and forgive people. One of the best ways to introduce Allah in daawah is by His Mercy.

We should remember His Mercy then abstain from doing wrong action. When one knows that in the Hereafter Allah confines His Mercy  to the believers (and deals with the unelievers with His justice), one will seek to worship Allah and come nearer to Him in order to deserve His Mercy in the Hereafter. Allah is Most Merciful, so kind towards you, why should we disobey Him?

Ar Raheem

The one who has extensive mercy but He expresses it to the one whom He chooses.

Al Baqarah 2: 163

Lâ ilâha illa Huwa (there is none who has the right to be worshipped but He), the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

Ar Raheem is Allah’s special mercy only for the believers.

Al Ahzaab 33: 43

He it is Who sends Salât (His blessings) on you, and His angels too (ask Allâh to bless and forgive you), that He may bring you out from darkness (of disbelief and polytheism) into light (of Belief and Islâmic Monotheism). And He is Ever Most Merciful to the believers. (43)

Al Baqarah 2: 37

Then Adam received from his Lord Words. And his Lord pardoned him (accepted his repentance). Verily, He is the One Who forgives (accepts repentance), the Most Merciful (37)

Allah is the Greatest Acceptor of Repentance. The Especially Merciful.

This mercy implies pity, patience and forgiveness all of which sinners need.

Az Zumar 39: 53
Say: “O ‘Ibâdî (My slaves) who have transgressed against themselves (by committing evil deeds and sins)! Despair not of the Mercy of Allâh, verily Allâh forgives all sins. Truly, He is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful

Combination of Ar Rahman and Ar Raheem

They often appear together for example in Basmallah and in the second verse of Al Fatehah. When they come together it expresses ALOT of mercy. Allah is the one Most Merciful.

Ar Raheem appears with other names too

At Tawaburr Raheem

Ghafooruru raheem

Al Azeezur Raheem.

Hadith on Mercies

The Book Pertaining to Repentance and Exhortation to Repentance (Kitab Al-Tauba)

Muslim :: Book 37 : Hadith 6626

Abu Huraira reported that Allah’s Messenger (may peace be upon him) said: When Allah created the creation as He was upon the Throne, He put down in His Book: Verily, My mercy predominates My wrath.

Good Manners and Form (Al-Adab)

Bukhari :: Book 8 :: Volume 73 :: Hadith 29

Narrated Abu Huraira:

I heard Allah’s Apostle saying, Allah divided Mercy into one-hundred parts and He kept its ninety-nine parts with Him and sent down its one part on the earth, and because of that, its one single part, His creations are Merciful to each other, so that even the mare lifts up its hoofs away from its baby animal, lest it should trample on it.”

The Book Pertaining to Repentance and Exhortation to Repentance (Kitab Al-Tauba)

Muslim :: Book 37 : Hadith 6631

Abu Huraira reported Allah’s Messenger (may peace be upon him) as saying: There are one hundred (parts of) mercy for Allah and He has sent down out of these one part of mercy upon the jinn and human beings and the insects and it is because of this (one part) that they love one another, show kindness to one another and even the beast treats its young one with affection, and Allah has reserved ninetynine parts of mercy with which He would treat His servants on the Day of Resurrection.

The Book Pertaining to Repentance and Exhortation to Repentance (Kitab Al-Tauba)

Muslim :: Book 37 : Hadith 6632

Salman Farisi reported Allah’s Messenger (may peace be upon him) as saying: Verily, there are one hundred (parts of) mercy for Allah, and it is one part of this mercy by virtue of which there is mutual love between the people and ninety-nine reserved for the Day of Resurrection.

The Book Pertaining to Repentance and Exhortation to Repentance (Kitab Al-Tauba)

Muslim :: Book 37 : Hadith 6634

Salman reported that Allah’s Messenger (may peace be upon him) said: Verily, Allah created, on the same very day when He created the heavens and the earth, one hundred parts of mercy. Every part of mercy is coextensive with the space between the heavens. and the earth and He out of this mercy endowed one part to the earth and it is because of this that the mother shows affection to her child and even the beasts and birds show kindness to one another and when there would be the Day of Resurrection, Allah would make full (use of Mercy).

We learn from this hadith that kind and compassionate treatment is like by Allah and is in fact His blessings. This is the reason He has given part of it to His creatures, and a person who is so hard-hearted, that he is not even aware of it has a defect which is pleasing to Allah. Moreover it is a sign that such a person is deprived of divine blessing and mercy.

On the day of resurrection, Almighty Allah will bestow upon the believers hundred mercies. This news has great hopes and joy for His slaves.

Some hadith mentioning Allah’s mercy

Abu Hurairah (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: I heard Messenger of Allah (Peace be upon him) saying, “When Allah created the creatures, He wrote in the Book, which is with Him over His Throne: `Verily, My Mercy prevailed over My Wrath”
[Al-Bukhari and Muslim].

We had a wonderful discussion when S asked me, why Allah gives only 1 mercy to us? Why not give all of the mercy now? These are among my answers please correct me or add more. Jazakumullahhu Khayr for the sharing.

1. Allah creates us to test us. Allah will give the best of His rewards only for those who pass this tests.

2. The mercy that Allah is saving for later is way better than what already we perceive as good now (the 1 part of Allah’s mercy now). The best of mercy is what Allah saves only for the believers.

3. Allah gives so many things for His creation on earth now. Alla these things like wealth, mercy, water, intelligence are insignificant to Him. Thus He gives them to all whether one believes or not to Him. The mercy and the reward that He saves for later is the most important in the sight of Allah. And the best of this, is only f0r the believers. May we be among those who an receive them.

4. My friend posted this on her blog which I found so apt, “The slave does not deserve anything. Whatever is given to us is only by the generosity and mercy of our Master.” Which I think seals the discussion.

But it was a good question I think. We had a fruitful discussion, Alhamdulillah. May Allah bring us more knowledge for us to get closer to Him.

Suratul Quraysh 106: 1-4

(It is a great Grace and protection from Allâh), for the taming of the Quraish, (1)
(And with all those Allâh’s Grace and Protections for their taming, We cause) the (Quraish) caravans to set forth safe in winter (to the south), and in summer (to the north without any fear), (2)
So let them worship (Allâh) the Lord of this House (the Ka’bah in Makkah). (3)
(He) Who has fed them against hunger, and has made them safe from fear. (4)

It is reported in Tafsir Ibn kathir, that this surah is a continuation of Suratul Feel. However the sahabahs wrote “In the Name of Allah Most Gracious, Most merciful” between the two surahs. This is because if the two are combined the meaning would be “We have destroyed its people in order to gather (Ilaf) of the Quraysh. Allah knows best.

Makkah was an infertile land. No agricultural activity can take place in Makkah. The people of Makkah depend on business where they travel around to do business.

We made a little craft for Z to put the arabic names for the seasons now that they have learned the arabic word for winter and summer. We are currenly in autumn. Alhamdulillah wonderful weather nowadays.

The Quraysh took advantage of the seasons in the year to travel. During the hot season of the summer, they would travel to the Shams where the temperature is much cooler. While during the clod season, they would travel to the south where the temperature is moderate.

Let’s look at the average yearly temperature around these regions. We will look at temperature in the month of January which represents the most peak winter. And July which would normaly represent the most peak summer.

Syria which would represent the northern area yaani the Shams. Refer HERE.
January – 6 Celcius
July – 26 celcius

Makkah. refer HERE.
January – 23 Celcius
July – 35 Celcius

Yemen . Refer HERE.
January – 26 Celcius
July – 33 Celcius.

I am slightly doubting on the data at Makkah in July. I reckon it can actually hit 50 celcius or at least 40 plus.

But the gist is, you can see the best place to travel in the mid summer is to the Shams when the temperature is most moderate. And to take advantage of the moderate winter temperature along the jazeera area.

And this was what the quraysh did.

This was all by the Grace of Allah.

To travel around the Arabia at that time was very dangerous for there are bandits everywhere. However no one dared to touch the Quraysh because of their reputation as the caretaker of the House of  Allah. This has become more evident after the year of the Elephants.

But they have forgotten that this was a favour given by Allah to them.

Have they not seen that We have made (Makkah) a secure sanctuary, while men are being snatched away from all around them? Then do they believe in Bâtil (falsehood – polytheism, idols and all deities other than Allâh), and deny (become ingrate for) the Graces of Allâh? (Surah Ankaboot 29: 67)

Arabic words learnt in this two ayah

رحلة – Journey

الشِتأ – the winter

الصَيْف – the summer

Identifying seasons in arabic

spring – الرَّبيع

autumn – الخريف

The protection that the quraysh had when they travel around either during winter or summer are all blessings from Allah. Their elevated status that they are the custodians of Kaabah are also blessings from Allah.

Allah continues in the next verse.

So let them worship (Allâh) the Lord of this House (the Ka’bah in Makkah). (3)

This verse is actually a command from Allah to them to worship Allah, the one who bestows them with all the blessings. Also the one who is the Lord of Kaabah of which the reason of their elevation in status.

Allah reminded the people of Quraysh to worship the Lord of the honoured Kaabah. The holy Kaabah that Allah protected from the elephants. Allah has honoured the Quraysh as the custodian of Kaabah. Because of the Kaabah, Allah has raised the status of the Quraysh among the arabs. Even more so after the Year of the Elephants.

However the Quraysh, has been worshipping false idols and has placed idols around the holy house. Whereas they know Allah is the one who creates them and the one who provides rizq and the one who protects them.

Let us take heed of the lessons. Only ask from Allah. And Only He is to be worshipped.

Allah continues in the next verse on the other blessings that are given to them

1. fed them against hunger

2. Security

The Qurays were blessed by Allah

1. protection of the caravan when they travel for business

2. The advantageous  of the seasons throughtout the year

3. Security during the time of harm

4. fed from hunger.

And yet they worship idols who couldn’t do neither good nor harm to them.

Let us reflect on our own well being. More so if we have status, or we are born in a good family and surrounded by “noble” people.

Do we ever stop and think that these are all from Allah. We must continuously thank Him and continuously doing good deeds that pleases Allah.

Arabic words in verse 3 and 4

هذا البيت – this house. In Quran this means Kaabah

جوع – hunger

خَوْف – fear

I am hungry – أنا جَوعن

I am full – أنا شبعان

Things to bring in

Huruf jar – Li, min

Lessons from this surah:

  1. Security is one the greatest blessings
  2. The Sacred House (Al Kaabah) was honoured before Islam and after Islam
  3. And thus the custodian of Kaabah was also honoured by the Arab people.
  4. The livelihood of the people of Makkah was mostly due to the trades.
  5. The Quraysh travel to different places in the season of winter and summer for trade.
  6. Allah has honoured and elevated their status such that their traveling was safe despite the rampant robberies and insecurities within the arab world.
  7. Allah reminded them of the blessings that He has bestowed on them and that they should worship only Him and not the other deities.
