Surah Hud 11: 42-43
So it (the ship) sailed with them amidst the waves like mountains, and Nûh (Noah) called out to his son, who had separated himself (apart), “O my son! Embark with us and be not with the disbelievers.” (42) (The son) replied: “I will betake myself to some mountain, it will save me from the water.” Nûh (Noah) said: “This day there is no saviour from the Decree of Allâh except him on whom He has mercy.” And a wave came in between them, so he (the son) was among the drowned. (43)
This was Yam, the son of Nuh, who was the brother of Sam, Ham and Yafuth. Some said his name is Kanaan. He was a disbeliever and committed evil deeds. He opposed his father and in his religion and teachings, thus he drowned along with all others who drowned. (Ibn Kathir)
What a difficult situation for Nuh alaihi salam to watch his own son perished in the water and died as disbeliever as well.
When they landed safely on Mount Judi, Nuh alaihi salam said
Surah Hud 11: 45
And Nûh (Noah) called upon his Lord and said, “O my Lord! Verily, my son is of my family! And certainly, Your Promise is true, and You are the Most Just of the judges.” (45)
Nuh alaihi salam was sad that his own son also perish in the flood.
Allah answered that his son was not from his family who Allah promise to rescue
Surah Hud 11: 46-47
He said: “O Nûh (Noah)! Surely, he is not of your family; verily, his work is unrighteous, so ask not of Me that of which you have no knowledge! I admonish you, lest you be one of the ignorant.” (46) Nûh (Noah) said: “O my Lord! I seek refuge with You from asking You that of which I have no knowledge. And unless You forgive me and have Mercy on me, I will indeed be one of the losers.” (47)
The lesson we learn here is Islam makes us true families even thicker than blood. As Allah has declared that since his son is not of a believer, he is thus not among the family.
Another lesson here is often when we see a misbehaving child, we would blame on the parents. while sometime there are some truth to it, but not necessarily be the case.
As the case here, the faith of Prophet Nuh alaihi salam did not reach some of the members in his family. His wife and his son were disbelievers and both are mention in the Quran.
As for us, we strive to be good Muslims and live to strive to please Allah. We shall remind ourselves on how Allah has reminded us in Surah tahrim 66: 6
O you who have believed, protect yourselves and your families from a Fire whose fuel is people and stones, over which are [appointed] angels, harsh and severe; they do not disobey Allah in what He commands them but do what they are commanded.
