Prophet Nuh alaihi salam : The Flood

So We revealed to him (saying): “Construct the ship under Our Eyes and under Our Revelation (guidance). Then, when Our Command comes, and water gushes forth from the oven, take on board of each kind two (male and female), and your family, except those thereof against whom the Word has already gone forth. And address Me not in favour of those who have done wrong. Verily, they are to be drowned. (Al mumeenoon 23: 27)

Allah ordered that when His Decree comes and the punishment befalls Prophet Nuh alaihi salam is to do the followings

i. Put in the Ark a pair from every kind of animal

ii. Take with him his family who believe meaning to leave the ones who disbelieve

iii. And not to beseech Allah when he sees the disbelievers drowning

The scholars differed regarding how many people boarded the Ark with Nuh. It is reported from Ibn Abbas, that there were eighty men along with their wives. Some said 72, some said 10 while some said only his family.

As for the wife of Prophet Nuh alaihi salam, some said she died before the Flood. Some said she drowned with the disbelievers. The Bible says she was in the Ark, thus perhaps she became disbeliever afterwards.

Regardless, we know that the wife of Prophet Nuh alaihi salam was a disbeliever

Surah at Tahrim 66: 10

Allâh sets forth an example for those who disbelieve, the wife of Nûh (Noah) and the wife of Lut (Lot). They were under two of our righteous slaves, but they both betrayed them (their husbands by rejecting their doctrine) So they [Nûh (Noah) and Lut (Lot) A.S.] availed them (their respective wives) not, against Allâh, and it was said: “Enter the Fire along with those who enter!” (10)

Allah instructed Prophet Noah alaihi salam

Surah Mu’meenoon 23: 28-29

And when you have embarked on the ship, you and whoever is with you, then say: “All the praises and thanks are to Allâh, Who has saved us from the people who are Zâlimûn (i.e. oppressors, wrong-doers, polytheists, those who join others in worship with Allâh). (28) And say: “My Lord! Cause me to land at a blessed landing-place, for You are the Best of those who bring to land.” (29)

In another Surah Hud 11: 40-41

(So it was) till when Our Command came and the oven gushed forth (water like fountains from the earth). We said: “Embark therein, of each kind two (male and female), and your family – except him against whom the Word has already gone forth – and those who believe. And none believed with him, except a few.” (40) And he [Nûh (Noah) A.S.] said: “Embark therein, in the Name of Allâh will be its (moving) course and its (resting) anchorage. Surely, my Lord is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.” (Tafsir At-Tabarî) (41)And he [Nûh (Noah) A.S.] said: “Embark therein, in the Name of Allâh will be its (moving) course and its (resting) anchorage. Surely, my Lord is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.” (Tafsir At-Tabarî) (41)

It is clear in these ayahs, that before Prophet Nuh alaihi salam embark on the journey, he glorified Allah, thanked Allah and make du’a to Allah.

Similarly in another ayah in Surah Zukhroof 43:12-14

And Who has created all the pairs and has appointed for you ships and cattle on which you ride; (12) In order that you may mount on their backs, and then may remember the Favour of your Lord when you mount thereon, and say: “Glory to Him who has subjected this to us, and we could never have it (by our efforts).” (13) And verily, to Our Lord we indeed are to return! (14)

Thus, we should take this lesson and also glorify and praise Allah and make du’a to Allah before we ride in a vehicle.

Prophet Nuh alaihi salam began his journey with Allah’s name and ended it with Allah’s name.

The Flood

The waves of the water were like mountains

Hud 11: 42

So it (the ship) sailed with them amidst the waves like mountains,

This is because Allah sent down rain from the sky, the like of which the people of earth has never seen before. Similarly, there was no rain like it after the incident. The earth gushed fourth its water from its springs when it was ordered to do so.

Surah al Qamar 54: 10-14

Then he invoked his Lord (saying): “I have been overcome, so help (me)!” (10) So We opened the gates of heaven with water pouring forth. (11) And We caused the spring to gush forth from the earth. So the waters (of the heaven and the earth) met for a matter predestined (12) And We carried him on a (ship) made of planks and nails, (13) Floating under Our Eyes, a reward for him who had been rejected! (14) And indeed, We have left this as a sign, Then is there any that will remember (or receive admonition)? (15)

Subhanallah. Even the devastating tsunami that we watched can never be compared to the flood that befalls on the people of Nuh alaihi salam. May Allah protect us.

Surah al Haqqah 69: 11-12

Verily! When the water rose beyond its limits [Nûh’s (Noah) Flood], We carried you (mankind) in the floating [ship that was constructed by Nûh (Noah)]. (11) That We might make it a (Noah’s ship)an admonition for you, and that it might be retained by the retaining ears. (12)

Discuss. Allah says that Allah is giving these stories as a reminder for us. Reflect to what you have learned by far and what kind of admonition did you get.
