For these lessons, we used the reference by Sheikh Uthaymeen – what is Shirk. You can view it here along with other references Insya Allah.
What is shirk?
Shirk means to share with others that only Allah deserves.
For example worshiping other than Allah. This is the main type of shirk.
Allah says in many places in the Quran. An Nisaa 4: 36
Worship Allâh and join none with Him (in worship)
Allah says to worship Him ALONE. If someone worships other than Allah or worship something along with worshiping Allah – he is still committing shirk. This is considered disbeliever.
Shirk is opposite of tawheed. Tawheed is worshiping Allah alone while shirk is worshiping other things along with Allah or making partners with Allah.
The Greatest Sin
1. Shirk is the greatest sin against Allah
Allah says in surah An Nisaa 4: 48
Verily, Allâh forgives not that partners should be set up with Him (in worship), but He forgives except that (anything else) to whom He wills; and whoever sets up partners with Allâh in worship, he has indeed invented a tremendous sin
2. Shirk is the WORST of all major sins.
Prophet Muhammad ( مّوسل عليه اهلل ىّصل ) once asked his companions:
Should I tell you the greatest of all major sins?
His companions said, “Of course, messenger of Allah.” He then said:
Making Shirk with Allah, disobeying parents, and lying.
He was laying back when he said that, but then he sat up and began repeating that over and over because of how serious Shirk and those other major sins are in Islam.
The prophet ( مّوسل عليه اهلل ىّصل ) was also asked, “What is the greatest sin?” He answered:
That you make something equal to Allah while he is the (only) one who created
3. Belittling Allah
Making someone or something equal to Allah is Shirk. This is belittling Allah because you think Allah can be less or equal to His partners.
Allah says in Surah al An’am 6: 1
those who disbelieve hold others as equal with their Lord.
And Allah says NOT to make anything equal to Allah. Al Baqarah 2: 22
Then do not set up rivals unto Allâh (in worship) while you know (that He Alone has the right to be worshipped).
4. Shirk is denying the reason Allah created us which is to worship Him alone
Ad Dzariyat 51: 56
And I (Allâh) created not the jinn and mankind except that they should worship Me (Alone).
So whoever worship others than Allah, they have made the creation equal to the creator. All creation are helpless and are in need of Allah. Allah is able to do anything and He needs nothing from His creation.
5. Shirk is the greatest crime of injustice and unfairness
Allah says in Surah Luqman 31: 13
Verily! Joining others in worship with Allâh is a great Zûlm (wrong) indeed.
Allah’s right is that He is to be worshiped thus when one makes shirk, they are making zalim by refusing to worship Him.
6. Shirk is the greatest form of misguidance
An Nisa 4: 116
Verily! Allâh forgives not (the sin of) setting up partners (in worship) with Him, but He forgives whom He wills sins other than that, and whoever sets up partners in worship with Allâh, has indeed strayed far away.
