The Angels and the Believers

Earlier we discussed about the role of angels with the sons of Adam which among them are to blow the soul in the mother’s womb, protecting people, conveying message, writing people’s deeds and taking the souls at death. These are for both believers and the disbelievers.

However there are also different roles of the angels to the believers and the non believers. This is what we will discuss now Insya Allah.

1. Their love for the believers

In Saheeh al-Bukhari, the Prophet sal Allahu alayhi wa sallam says:

“When Allah subhaanahu wa ta’aala loves someone, he calls Jibreel and Allah then says, ‘Ya Jibreel! Inni uhibbu fulan! (Oh Jibreel! Verily, I love such and such a person, so love him!)’”

And Allah names that person and then Jibreel loves that person. Then Jibreel calls out to all the angels of the heavens and he says, “Allah loves so and so, so love him!”and so all the angels love him. And then Allah places pleasure in the hearts of the people towards this person!”

The Prophet sal Allaau alayhi wa sallam said in another narration of this hadeeth:

“The slave will continue to try to win the pleasure of Allah; he will try to win the love of Allah until Allah calls Jibreel and says to him, ‘Oh Jibreel! My slave so and so is trying to please me, verily my love has overcome him!’”

The thing that we need to do first, is that Allah to love us? Let’s brainstorm what we can do to achieve this status?

2. Sending blessings to the Believers

Allah tells us that the angels sends blessings on the Messenger sallallahu alaihi wasalam

Al Ahzab 33: 56

Allâh sends His Salât (Graces, Honours, Blessings, Mercy) on the Prophet (Muhammad SAW) and also His angels (ask Allâh to bless and forgive him).

They also send blessings on the believers

Al Ahzab 33: 43

He it is Who sends Salât (His blessings) on you, and His angels too (ask Allâh to bless and forgive you), that He may bring you out from darkness (of disbelief and polytheism) into light (of Belief and Islâmic Monotheism). And He is Ever Most Merciful to the believers. (43)

Salaah (blessings) from Allah means that He praises His slaves. In this case before the angels.

Salaah (blessings) from the angels means that they pray for people and seek forgiveness for them.

Wouldn’t be a great reward to be included among those they send the salaah to?

How do we achieve this?

Some examples

ii. Teaching people good things.

Abu Umaamah narrated that the messenger of Allah said:

“Allah and His angels, and the inhabitants of the heavens and the earth, even the ant in its hole, and even the fish, send blessings upon the one who teaches people good things”
(Sunan at-Tirmidhi, 2/343, no. 2161)

ii. Those who wait for prayer in congregation.

Abu Hurayrah said:

“The Messenger of Allah said: ‘The angels send blessings on any one of you so long as he stays where he is sitting. They say, ‘O Allah, forgive him, O Allah, have mercy on him’, so long as he does not break his wudoo’.’”
(Bukhari, 2/131, no. 647)

iii. Those who pray in the first row (s).

Al-Baraa’ ibn ‘Aazib narrates that the Messenger of Allah said:

“Allah and His angels send blessings upon the front rows”

(Sunan Abi Dawood, 1/120, no.618)

iv. Those who fill in the gaps in the rows.

It is narrated that Aa’ishah said:

“The Messenger of Allah said: ‘Allah and His angels send blessings on those who complete the rows, and whoever fills a gap (in a row), Allah will raise his status because of it’”
(Sunan Ibn Maajah, 1/164, no. 814)

v. Those who eat suhoor.

In Saheeh Ibn Hibbaan and Mu’jam at-Tabaraani al-Awsat it is narrated with a hasan isnaad from Ibn ‘Umar that the Messenger of Allah said:

“Allah and His angels send blessing upon those who eat suhoor”
(Saheeh al-Jaami, 2/135)

vi. Those who send blessings upon the Prophet ( )

Ahmad narrated in his Musnad and Al-Diyaa’ narrated in Al-Mukhtaarah from ‘Amir Ibn Rabee’ah with a hasan isnaad that the Messenger of Allah said:

“There is no person who sends blessings upon on me, but the angels send blessings on him so long as he sends blessings on me. So let a person do a little of that or a lot”
(Saheeh al-Jaami’, 5/174)

vii. Those who visit the sick.

It is narrated from ‘Ali ibn Abi Taalib that the Prophet said:

There is no man who visits a sick person in the evening, but seventy thousand angels go out with him, and pray for forgiveness for him until morning, and he will have provision in Paradise. And whoever goes to him in the morning, seventy thousand angels go with him, and pray for forgiveness for him until evening, and he will have provision in Paradise
(Sunan Abi Dawood, 2/598, no. 2655. Abu Dawood stated this hadith is saheeh marfoo’)

How does the angels’ blessings affect us?

Al Ahzab 33: 43

He it is Who sends Salât (His blessings) on you, and His angels too (ask Allâh to bless and forgive you), that He may bring you out from darkness (of disbelief and polytheism) into light (of Belief and Islâmic Monotheism). And He is Ever Most Merciful to the believers. (43)

When Allah mentions us to the hosts on high, and when the angels pray for the believers and ask for forgiveness for them. This has the effect of guiding us and and ridding the darkness of kufr and shirk and sin, leading us to the light.
