Prophet Hud Alaihi Salam

Prophet Hud is sent to the PEOPLE of  ‘AD.

The Ad were Arabs who lived in Al AHQAF yaani the dunes said to be between Hadramawt in Yemen and Oman.

They lived in tents with huge pillars which must have been a fantastic building and structure at  that time.

Al Fajr 89: 6-8

Saw you (O Muhammad (SAW)) not how your Lord dealt with ‘Ad (people) (6) Of Iram (Who were very tall) like (lofty) pillars, (7) The like of which were not created in the land? (8)

They are skilled people. They must have reached the time of high skilled architecture. They build landmarks on high ground just for show offs even though they do not need them. These landmarks could be beautiful castles and palaces and monuments.

Al Shuara 26: 128-129

Question
Do we not see this in the world we live in too?

They were powerful people. Some said their ruling extended to up to Iraq, Syria area and up to the northern Sub continent. Allah knows best. They were described as tyrants.

Allah gave them the worldly richness.
They had livestocks which can be implied as food and source of living.
Children – they had human resource and numbers.
gardens and fountain – water resources. A very important need that flourish more of their supply of food and source of income.

It was said one their most important trade is the frankincense which are like gold now. It is traded up to china. These areas are supposedly in the route of trading frankincense. Allah knows best.

Al Shuara 26 : 130-135

After the flood during the Prophet Nooh alaihi salam, the ‘Ad were the first one to worship idols. Al Aaraf 7:69

When Prophet Hood conveyed the message, the people did not believe in him. Al Hud 11: 53-54

They said Prophet Hud didn not bring any miracles that the claim is true. Thus they are not going to leave their gods.

Like many disbelievers, they accused Prophet Hud alaihi salam as insane and crazy. In fact he had turned mad caused by the anger of their false gods.

Prophet Hud challenged them against their god Al Hud 11: 54-55. Their gods is just an inanimate body which can neither bring harm nor good to anyone. Prophet hud challenged them and told them to plan against him and to harm him.

Hud said, Al Hud 11:56

“I put my trust in Allâh, my Lord and your Lord! There is not a moving (living) creature but He has grasp of its forelock. Verily, my Lord is on the Straight Path (the truth). (56)

Like all disbelievers, the People of Ad also do not believe in the hereafter, where they would be raised up against after their worldly death and will thereon live forever punished in the severest torment if they do not believe in Allah.

They accuse Prophet Hud alaihi Salam is just a man who invents lies and they will never believe.

Al Mukminun 23: 31-39

Lessons
Believing in the hereafter is an essential element of our eeman. Not believing that all of lives in this temporary world will all be questioned again will make us like one of these disbelievers who had lived to their heart content. Not obeying Allah, transgressing, doing whatever they want because to them life is now. No one will question me anything. they are not afraid.

Because we believe that Allah will bring out even the littlest thing you hide, we will be careful living in this world. May Allah preserve us.

With all the richness and power they have, they refuse to believe that there is Allah who gave them all these. They asked whether Prophet hud is suggesting them to leave their practices of their parents and grand parents and great grandparents and ancestors?

Al Aaraf 7: 70
Al Shuara 26 : 136-138

Al Hud 11:32

And they believe they won’t be punished!

Lessons
And this is the danger of getting lost in wealth and power and the “wonders” of life. remember children, if we are bestowed by Allah the best of this dunya life, to always go back to Allah, the one who gives you all this. Wealth as well as poverty are tests by Allah. May Allah help us in all ways.

Then Prophet Hood warned them that Allah’s wrath is already on them. Worshipping other than Allah they themselves created and named. Rejected the truth and persisted in falsehood.

Prophet Hood turned to Allah for the ‘Ad has accused him of falsehood

Al Mukminun 23: 39-41

And also the ‘Ad has challenged Prophet Hood alaihisalam to bring on the threat.

Al Ahqaf 46: 22

Allah begins the punishment on them as a long drought and famine. For a city that has been thriving on lush rivers, springs, fountains and garden to be struck with  drought and famine is hard. But instead seeing this as sign from Allah, they still persist on disbelieving.

Until one day dark cloud approach. And the people were happy because they thought rain was coming. Like how we ourselves would think dark cloud is the cloud of rain.

But indeed this dark cloud is the cloud of punishment bringing in strong wind of terror and engulfing them with terrible sandstorm.

Al Ahqaf 46:24-25

Then, when they saw it as a dense cloud coming towards their valleys, they said: “This is a cloud bringing us rain!” Nay, but it is that (torment) which you were asking to be hastened — a wind wherein is a painful torment! Destroying everything by the Command of its Lord! So they became such that nothing could be seen except their dwellings! Thus do We recompense the people who are Mujrimûn (polytheists, disbelievers, sinners)!

Allah made the wind rage for seven nights and eight days continuously. It went on and on without respite

Al Haqqah 69:6-7

And as for ‘Ad, they were destroyed by a furious violent wind! Which Allâh imposed on them for seven nights and eight days in succession, so that you could see men lying overthrown (destroyed), as if they were hollow trunks of date-palms!

The wind was so violent it throws people, lifts them up, throw him in the air and let them fall on their head until they were mere bodies without heads.

Al Qamar 54:19-20

Verily, We sent against them a furious wind of harsh voice on a day of evil omen and continuous calamity. Plucking out men as if they were uprooted stems of date-palms.

The wind sent to them was sterile which means it does you no good. It does not pollinate any tree nor it brings any cool. What it does is bring ruin.

Ad Dhariyat 51: 41-42

And in ‘Ad (there is also a sign) when We sent against them the barren wind; It spared nothing that it reached, but blew it into broken spreads of rotten ruins.

Also in hadith, Prophet Muhammad salallahu alaihi wasalam mentioned about this wind

Invoking Allah for Rain (Istisqaa)

Bukhari :: Book 2 :: Volume 17 :: Hadith 145

Narrated Ibn Abbas:

The Prophet said, “I was granted victory with As-Saba and the nation of ‘Ad was destroyed by Ad-Dabur (westerly wind) .
