Hadith 4 – Man’s Development and His Destiny Part 1

We did the hadith half way for now. Trying to memorise the arabic text and writing it down in arabic, Insya Allah.

Abu ‘Abd al-Rahman ‘Abdullah bin Mas’ud, radiyallahu ‘anhu, reported: The Messenger of Allah, sallallahu ‘alayhi wasallam, the most truthful, the most trusted, told us:

Verily the creation of each one of you is brought together in his mother’s womb for forty days in the form of a nutfah (a drop), then he becomes an ‘alaqah (clot of blood) for a like period, then a mudghah (morsel of flesh) for a like period, then there is sent to him the angel who blows his soul into him and who is commanded with four matters: to write down his rizq (sustenance), his life span, his actions, and whether he will be happy or unhappy (i.e. whether or not he will enter Paradise).

By the One, other than Whom there is no deity, verily one of you performs the actions of the people of Paradise until there is but an arms length between him and it, and that which has been written overtakes him, and so he acts with the actions of the people of the Hellfire and thus enters it; and verily one of you performs the actions of the people of the Hellfire, until there is but an arms length between him and it, and that which has been written overtakes him and so he acts with the actions of the people of Paradise and thus he enters it. [Narrated by al-Bukhaari and Muslim.

Beginning of Creation
Bukhari :: Book 4 :: Volume 54 :: Hadith 430

Muslim :: Book 33 : Hadith 6390

This hadith was not only recorded by Al-Bukhari and Muslim but by other Scholars as well.

Apart from ‘Abdullah bin Mas’ud, this hadith was also narrated by many other companions (Sahabahs).

The statement of ibn Mas’ood that the Prophet sallAllaahu alayhi wa salaam was “the Truthful, the Trusted” means that he was Truthful in his speech and that he was Trusted in whatever he came with of the the Wahee (inspiration).

Activity
Reminder of the characteristics of Prophet Muhammad s.a.w. that he was an honest man and was known to be Al Amin.

Reminder of the Pillars of Faith and one of them is to believe in the Prophet (s).

Stages

In this hadith collected by Imam Nawawi narrated by Ibn Masood, there are a few important stages in a baby’s development.

1. Nutfah – drop of  semen and woman’s egg gather together  in mother’s womb for a period of time

2. alaqah – then it becomes a clot of blood which sticks to the mother’s womb.

3. mudghah – looks like a chewed lump of flesh.

Surah Al Hajj 22:5

O mankind! If you are in doubt about the Resurrection, then verily! We have created you (i.e. Adam) from dust, then from a Nutfah (mixed drops of male and female sexual discharge i.e. offspring of Adam), then from a clot (a piece of thick coagulated blood) then from a little lump of flesh,— some formed and some unformed (as in the case of miscarriage), that We may make (it) clear to you (i.e. to show you Our Power and Ability to do what We will). And We cause whom We will to remain in the wombs for an appointed term, then We bring you out as infants, then (give you growth) that you may reach your age of full strength. And among you there is he who dies (young), and among you there is he who is brought back to the miserable old age, so that he knows nothing after having known. And you see the earth barren, but when We send down water (rain) on it, it is stirred (to life), it swells and puts forth every lovely kind (of growth). (5)

Al Mu’minoon 23:12-14

And indeed We created man (Adam) out of an extract of clay (water and earth). (12) Thereafter We made him (the offspring of Adam) as a Nutfah (mixed drops of the male and female sexual discharge and lodged it) in a safe lodging (womb of the woman). (13)Then We made the Nutfah into a clot (a piece of thick coagulated blood), then We made the clot into a little lump of flesh, then We made out of that little lump of flesh bones, then We clothed the bones with flesh, and then We brought it forth as another creation. So Blessed is Allâh, the Best of creators. (14)

The quran was revealed to Prophet Muhammad s.a.w. who was an illiterate more than 1400 years ago. When the world of science was still in darkness. Allahu Akbar!
