Excellence of the Adhan

Before we start the lesson, we revised back the story of how the Adhan first started. I did this by asking them to narrate the story in turns.

This week topic is a continuation of the subject adhan. Today we highlighted the excellence of adhan that are found in the hadith.

Superiority/ Virtues of Adhan

Book of Call to Prayer

Bukhari :: Book 1 :: Volume 11 :: Hadith 582

Narrated Abu Huraira:

Allah’s Apostle said, “When the Adhan is pronounced Satan takes to his heels and passes wind with noise during his flight in order not to hear the Adhan. When the Adhan is completed he comes back and again takes to his heels when the Iqama is pronounced and after its completion he returns again till he whispers into the heart of the person (to divert his attention from his prayer) and makes him remember things which he does not recall to his mind before the prayer and that causes him to forget how much he has prayed.”

This hadith tells Syaitan runs with great speed and he breaks wind, or he intentionally makes noise. Basically it shows that Syaitan will try to avoid the adhan. The second point is we must strive to stay focus in solat.

It’s easy to narrate this hadith for any children love the word fart. I stressed on the point that Shaytan will try to avoid the adhan and try as he might to make as much noise as he can.

Book of Call to Prayer

Bukhari :: Book 1 :: Volume 11 :: Hadith 589

Narrated Abu Huraira:

Allah’s Apostle said, “If the people knew the reward for pronouncing the Adhan and for standing in the first row (in congregational prayers) and found no other way to get that except by drawing lots they would draw lots, and if they knew the reward of the Zuhr prayer (in the early moments of its stated time) they would race for it (go early) and if they knew the reward of ‘Isha’ and Fajr (morning) prayers in congregation, they would come to offer them even if they had to crawl.”

This hadith points out that there are great rewards in the following

1. The one who pronounce the adhan

2. To hasten the prayer of Dzuhur

3. To stand in the first saf

4. To pray in congregation for Isyak and Fajar.

Children always love reward stories. This is the best time to talk about certain deeds that have high rewards.

Book of Call to Prayer

Bukhari :: Book 1 :: Volume 11 :: Hadith 583

Narrated ‘Abdul Rahman:

Abu Sa’id Al-Khudri told my father, “I see you liking sheep and the wilderness. So whenever you are with your sheep or in the wilderness and you want to pronounce Adhan for the prayer raise your voice in doing so, for whoever hears the Adhan, whether a human being, a jinn or any other creature, will be a witness for you on the Day of Resurrection.” Abu Said added, “I heard it (this narration) from Allah’s Apostle.”

On the Day of Requital, Almighty Allah will grant the faculty of speech, and all these things will testify for the Mu’adhdhin, as would be done by mankind and jinn. It also tells us hat even we are in the outdoors traveling for instance, we should still call out the adzan.

Part of what I parted to them was how during the judgment day, you will be surprised by the the unknown witnesses (to you) who would come up and tell Allah that you did so and so. We are outdoor lovers, and hadith like this is a great tip especially for my son, to remind us the importance of doing adhan, and not to mention the reward that comes with it, Insya Allah.

Book of Prayer

Muslim :: Book 4 : Hadith 750

Isa bin Talhah said: I was with Mu’awiya b. Abu Sufyan r.a. when the Mu’adhdhin called (Muslims) to prayer. Mu’awiya said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him) saying The Mu’adhdhins will have the longest necks on the Day of Resurrection.

This Hadith highlights the eminence of Mu’adhdhin and Adhan. Adhan means calling people to the worship of Allah. Mu’adhdhin (the caller) gets reward for the Salat of all those who hear his Adhan. The phrase “will have the longest necks” has been given different interpretations. One of them is that they are those who long for the Mercy of Allah more than anyone else. Another interpretation is that their necks will grow longer on the Day of Requital and so sweat will not reach them, for every one will sweat on that day depending on his deeds: sweat will reach up to one’s ankles or knees or waists. In the case of some people, sweat will reach up to their mouths. Another interpretation is that those who call Adhan will have an honourable and great status on the Day of Requital.

I reminded them that during the judgment day is the time that Allah will make us show our true deeds by some signs. For the muedzins for example will be recognised by their long necks, the ummah of Muhammad s.a.w. will be recognised by the beauty of their wudhu’ body parts and so on.

Superiority/ Virtues of Adhan

  1. Syaitan will run away when he hears the adhan and while doing that he will make loud fart and make loud noises so that he does not hear the adhan
  2. There are great rewards for those who pronounce the adhan
  3. When you go outdoor, select someone to announce the adhan before praying. Pronounce the adhan loudly for all the creations of Allah can hear the adhan. And they will be the witness of the adhan in the judgment day.
  4. In the judgment day, the muedzins will have long necks and they can be easily recognized due to this feature.

They are asked to put up the summary of the excellence of adhan in point form.

I intended to continue with the manners of listening to the adhan (which is actually the main objective of these adhan series), however we were blessed with a few guests so we had to stop the session and will resume the lesson Insya Allah, next week.

    thank you for your article. I am a Muslim but i dont understand few things and would like to be clarified. what is the actual purpose of Adhaan? is it to ensure that the muslims have to wake up to pray?

    these days, there are many ways to wake up contrary to old times when people used to depend on sun to mark the time. now there are mobile phones, alarm clocks, etc. I believe that if one wants to wake and pray, even if he/she is not woken up by adhaan or alarm, that person will go and pray but if he/she DOESNT want to pray, then no matter what you do, it wont work.

    what i want to know that is it necessary for adhaan to be shouted out loud esp. at 4 am? before that for at least half hour, there is a wake up call before the adhaan. this can be disturbing. its okay during the day, the morning time, i am sure anyone who wants to pray can wake up by alarm or being called by other people who are going to pray.

    please do not take me wrong..its just a clarification which i need.

      Assalamualaikum Nadia,

      I am sorry it took me more than a year to answer your question. I am not a scholar. I am a mother who goes to class and who wants to raise the children as per quran and sunnah as much as I can. may Allah help me.

      Your question is very valid, Insya Allah.

      But Adzan’s function is not solely to wake people up. If it is just to wake people up, indeed an alarm clock or the phone would be sufficient. It has more function than that. It most of all is to remind people of prayer time and how Great Allah is. And to hasten to make solah and through solah will you find success. It is also a testimony of syahadah. It is intended to bring to the mind of every believer and non-believer the substance of Islamic beliefs.

      One should reflect on the greatness of Allah when they hear the adzan and respond it back with our testimony. Upon the end of adzan we make a du’a and send blessings to our prophet salllahu alaihi wasalam. and in between the adzan and the iqamah, we make du’a for this is the time when du’a is most accepted. And by that we hasten to prayer ourselves. We only respond and make du’a when the adzan is live. We don’t respond (by repeating the muadzin) when it is a recorded one eitehr on phone or tv. And that is a major loss. For the reward of repeating the muadzin, and making the du’a after adzan and the opportunity for making du’a after that is void.

      Adzan also is a symbol of Islam. A country which does not resonate the adzan in public is very likely not an islamic country or the people have difficulty in practicing like Tunisia a few years ago. Many practicing Muslims I know, said they are deprived from listening to the adzan in the air. As if when one hears the adzan, one can tell, I am really free to practice as per the sunnah. I am in a Muslim country.

      Adzan also help to tell the men they need to rush to the masjid. yes, man should pray in the masjid in congregation. All of these, if people practice the way that prophet salllahu alaihi wasalam taught us should make us strong in unison.

      I am not sure which country you reside in. In the middle east they do have two adzans for fajr, one to indicate false fajr and the other is true fajr. This is perhaps a reminder for those who are doing qiyam that fajr is approaching. Because fajr time moves to early hours in winter, i think the more need to remind people that praying is better than sleeping.

      I am reminded of the time of sahabah when one of the enemy messengers was at the Muslims camp. they saw how the Muslims work. The sahabah were described as “Monks at night, warriors at day.”

      Alhamdulillah, you can be awake when you hear the adzan in the early hours of the morning because I know many people cant hear anything at all and sleep all the way.

      In some countries, I know they like to recite the quran before the adzan. Now this is definitely not in the sunnah to recite quran blast out at any time at all. You will find when things are not practice as per the sunnah, it is most disturbing and people will get angry at everything including the adzan.

      The very word of the adzan has been read out for 1400 years. We need the adzan to practice his sunnah. The sunnah to indicate the importance of prayer. To show to the world how much we are in remembrance of Allah. Not on your own but in a jamaah.

      I am not sure whether this is a clarification. May Allah forgive me for my lack of wisdom.
